Water supply by the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) in Nelliyode, long beleaguered by shortage of drinking water, is set to improve with pumping to the Nelliyode tank to begin soon, according to the KWA officials.
This is part of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)-aided project in the Attukal Zone, with the zone itself to be commissioned early next year. According to officials, work on the laying of distribution pipelines here, done under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), was almost over. With the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) expected to provide power supply in a couple of days, pumping of water from Aruvikkara mainline via the Nettayam branch could begin next week.
The move to pump water into the 25 lakh-litre capacity Nelliyode tank is expected to help over 20,000 connections spread over three wards in the area, currently served from the tank at the KWA’s Vellayambalam headquarters. Water supply to nearby areas will improve as well.
Power supply
The KWA had already requested the KSEB to provide power supply and approval was expected in a couple of days, a senior JICA official said.
Work on the JICA project for the Attukal Zone too had picked up pace, officials said, with work on laying of the mainline in the Attukal-Chiramukku stretch almost over. Another 250 m of lines were to be laid in Ambalathara.
