Man killed, houses damaged in landslips

A tribal was killed and about a dozen houses were destroyed in landslips and heavy rains in Idukki district during the last 24 hours ended this morning.

According to reports reaching here, landslips had occurred at four places in Udumbanchola taluk of the district. Besides the 12 houses that collapsed or washed away, 48 houses have been damaged.

Revenue Minister K. P. Rajendran said here on Sunday that the district authorities had been directed to shift people from the affected areas to safer places and carry out relief measures on an urgent basis. Rs. 1 lakh would be provided to the next of kin of the tribal who had died at Olikudi tribal settlement at Marayur in Devikilam taluk in a landslip.
