61{+s}{+t}Railway Week celebrations commence today

Railways have roped in artistes during the 61{+s}{+t}Railway Week celebrations commencing on Monday to disseminate the message of ‘Swacch Bharath-Swacch Rail’ as well as the safety measures to be adopted during train journeys.

A major attraction of the week-long celebration in Thiruvananthapuram railway division will be the live concert by a musical troupe “KARNATiix” with renowned musician and guitarist John Anthony. Anthony has been associated with socially relevant live concerts such as ‘No More Bhopal’ at Chennai and ‘Share the Love’ concert at Sri Lanka under the aegis of Sri Lankan government in aid of the children who suffered in the war in the island nation. The live concert will be played at all the major stations on April 12 and 13.

Closing ceremony

A closing ceremony will also be held at Thiruvananthapuram Central station on April 15, according to Railways.

Cleanliness drives, awareness campaigns and planting of saplings to increase the tree cover will be organised in all the major stations of the division as part of the celebrations.

The Railway Week is being observed to commemorate the first ever train run in the country between Bombay and Thane on April16, 1853. Railways started observing the week annually from 1956.

The national level function will be held at Bhubaneswar on April 16 which will be attended by Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu. Gowri Lakshmi Bai, member of the royal family of erstwhile Travancore, will be the chief guest at the function to be held at Tagore Theatre here. The Divisional Railway Manager, Sunil Bajpai will preside over the function.
