: There has been no study anywhere in the world in the last 15 years that has proven conclusively that mobile tower radiations can be harmful to human health, M.V. Pillai, an oncologist with Jefferson University Medical College, U.S., said. He was delivering the keynote address at a seminar on ‘Mobile Technologies and Health: Promises and Concerns’, organised by the Trivandrum Press Club and the Indian Medical Association (IMA), at Hotel Hilton Garden Inn on Thursday
The radiation from mobile towers and hand sets are non-ionizing and relatively less harmful than the ionizing radiation from X-rays and Gamma-rays which are known to cause mutations and cancer, he said. However, he cautioned that talking over mobile phones for long hours without using earphones might lead to reduced concentration and confusion in users. Also, it is not advisable to allow children to use mobile phones as their brains would still be developing, Dr. Pillai said. On the other hand, mobile technology and its possibilities are set to revolutionise the delivery of health services in the country as more doctors and nurses would rely on m-health , to provide faster access to quality health services, he said.
M-Health is useful in emergencies, and in monitoring lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.
