April 11, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - Thiruvananthapuram:

A virtual guiding system for the differently abled or visually challenged, developed by a team of students from the Royal College of Engineering and Technology, Thrissur, has bagged the first prize at the competitions for the fourth CSI- InApp software project award instituted by the Computer Society of India, Trivandrum chapter, and InApp, the Technopark-based company. Designed as a digital guide, the system uses speech and language processing for vocal interaction. The captured image of an object is transferred to the server using Wi-Fi and processed to extract the features. Using these features, the system comes up with a text description of the object which is converted into speech signals and made audible with the help of speakers.

A team from the Sri Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, won the second prize for an automated traffic signal software.
