The city Corporation is organising a ‘Green congress’ at Carmel Girls Higher Secondary School here on January 20 to increase the participation of students in waste management and environmental activities.
Competitions for school students, aimed at increasing their awareness of waste management and green surroundings, will be held as part of it.
Envisaged as part of the ‘My City, Beautiful City’ campaign that makes waste every individual’s responsibility, the green congress takes forward the activities launched by the civic body to reach out to the next generation through the ‘green army.’ The ‘green army’ was launched as part of Harithanagarotsavam organised at various places during the summer vacation.
In 27 schools
Today, ‘green army’ functions in 27 government and private schools and takes up various activities related to waste management and environment protection.
Students will be divided into four categories for the competitions. For higher secondary students, green project presentation, working model, and short film contests will be held. Photography, poster making, and cartoon competitions will be held for high school students, while upper primary students can take part in painting and pencil drawing. For lower primary students, pencil drawing competition will be held. The topics for the contests revolve around cleanliness, climate, greening, waste management, and water conservation.
Prizes for winners include Kindle, STEM kits, smart watches, and cash prizes.
Funds set aside for green army as part of the People’s Plan in 2016-17 will be used for the congress, which will be supported by the National Cadet Corps, National Service Scheme, and the Students Police Cadet.
Participants have to register their names for the competitions by January 13.
