No one can top grandparents in pampering a child. So, though Friday was a rainy day, students of Kendriya Vidyalaya Pattom shift-I actually looked forward to going to school. It was a day dedicated to entertaining their grandparents at school.
For the past few years, the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan has been observing Grandparents Day every November across the country. The Pattom KV had, until last year, split the celebrations into one for primary and the other for senior school students. Because the school is celebrating its golden jubilee in the 2014-15 academic year, the school authorities decided to turn Grandparents Day into a major event this time.
Instead of the far more serious Parent-Teacher Association meeting when a child’s progress or slip-ups are discussed, this was an interaction the students were more comfortable with.
Around 800 grandparents are said to have attended the programme held at the school auditorium here on Friday.
It was inaugurated by former Union Minister O. Rajagopal. In his address, he appreciated the school’s decision to organise such an event that honoured the role played by grandparents in a child’s life.
The grandparents were first welcomed by the youngest primary children of the school, who presented them with flowers and cards. For the rest of the morning, the grandparents were treated to colourful cultural programmes organised by the students.
