May 10, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:51 am IST - Thiruvananthapuram:

A CBI special court here on Monday convicted a Southern Railways commercial clerk for corruption, embezzlement of Central funds, criminal breach of trust, and falsification of railway accounts.

CBI judge R. Reghu sentenced the accused, Ajmeer Singh of Haryana, to four years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 4 lakh.

Cash embezzled

The CBI case was that Singh embezzled Rs.2,51,779 when he was the ticket clerk at Alappuzha railway station during 2002-03.

He issued platform tickets instead of journey tickets to passengers and fudged records to siphon off a sizeable part of the daily collection, the CBI had told the court.

Mr. Reghu sentenced Singh to four years for corruption and four years for the other offences against him. But the sentences would run concurrently, he said.

Fine payment

The judge said Singh would have to undergo further one year of imprisonment if he defaulted on the payment of fine.
