The role of Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers is not only in the formation of policy but also in serving as the adviser to political and administrative leaders, Governor P. Sathasivam has said.

Speaking at the valedictory function of a six-week-long training programme organised by the Institute of Management in Government (IMG) for the newly inducted IAS officers here on Friday, Mr. Sathasivam urged the IAS officers to focus on knowing the rules, policies, and social realities of their States.

The responsibility of IAS officers was to help people “from the ground level up” in order to serve in a timely and effective manner, he said. Mr. Sathasivam also lauded the IMG for the systematic manner in which the training been structured, and for conducting programmes which were aimed at fine-tuning the State-level officers into the purview of All India Service.

The Governor said “such training of broadening your horizons and preparing you for an ongoing process of refinement will help you live up to the expectations of the most prestigious service,” he said. The training, to the newly inducted 34 IAS officials from 10 States, had three main intensive training sessions, four weeks of classroom training, one week of Bharath Darshan, and a one week foreign social visit to Sri Lanka. The visit to the island nation took place after the floods. The visiting team donated an equivalent to 65,000 Sri Lankan Rupees to help the flood victims and express solidarity with them.
