A 19-year old girl drowned in the Karamana river after she allegedly jumped off a bridge in Aryanad on Monday.

According to the Aruvikkara police, the deceased has been identified as Anjali, who hailed from Uriyacode, near Aryanad. The alleged suicide bid is believed to have taken place by around 9 a.m. when she jumped off the Koovakkudi bridge.

The police said that the teenager did not pay heed to a woman, who attempted to reason with her and discourage her from leaping into the river. She was soon swept away by the strong waves, an hour after which the body was fished out.

The girl, who was a student of the G. Karunakaran Memorial Cooperative College near Aruvikkara, purportedly told her mother Suma that she was leaving for her college. Her father Sasikumar has been employed in the Middle East. The body has been handed over to the family after conducting post-mortem at the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College Hospital.
