Around 15 truckloads of garbage were transported from the city to the Kochuveli railway station on Sunday to be used in platform construction.
District Collector K.N. Satheesh, who had on Saturday issued prohibitory orders in the city, said that the movement of garbage was smooth. There were no protests.
The prohibitory order under CrPC 144 was clamped on Saturday in view of the public sanitation crisis in the city following the closure of the Vilappilsala garbage treatment plant.
As per the order, non-bailable case will be booked against offenders who dump waste in public places or cause hindrance to movement of garbage by the Corporation.
Mr. Satheesh will convene a meeting of Corporation councillors on Monday to formulate a plan to deal with the garbage crisis. Corporation secretary E. Devadas said that the meeting would discuss strategies to improve the garbage collection mechanism.
Organic waste too
“We are mostly transporting non-biodegradable waste such as plastic and construction debris to Kochuveli. A good amount of organic waste is also being taken. Still we will have to strengthen household-level waste treatment projects to bring down the quantity of organic waste. For this we need the support of the councillors,” he said.
