The district administration has set the ball rolling to make New Year festivities intoxicant-free.
A press note issued here said District Collector K. Vasuki told a ‘Vimukthi’ meeting here on Friday that more than 50% of the cases registered had to do with alcoholism and substance abuse. Almost 60% of cases of atrocities against women and children were related to intoxication of one kind or the other. The presence of intoxicants had been detected among the accused in 40% of murder cases, she said.
‘Vimukthi’ aims at making the district fee of intoxication of any kind. People should take up the message of anti-intoxication to ensure that the New Year celebrations remained free of intoxication of any kind. A meeting would be held at the Panchayat Association hall at 10.30 a.m, on December 12. All agencies and people working in the anti-intoxication movement should participate in the meeting, the Collector requested.
A meeting of ayalkkoottams, residents’ associations, and Oorukoottams will be held on December 17 to spread the message of ‘Vimukthi’. Committees should be set up in all wards and meetings held before December 10, the review meeting decided.
