June 22, 2012 01:56 pm | Updated 01:56 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The Intelligent Enforcement Automation System for Kerala, developed by the Kerala State IT Mission for the Motor Vehicles Department for enhancing road safety and detecting traffic violations automatically, has won the e-World Jury Choice Award 2012.

Industries Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty said here on Thursday that the award had been given for the `Best Initiative for use of ICT in Public Safety, Security and Disaster Management’ category.

The system aims at ensuring that the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 are strictly adhered to by the road users.

The enforcement automation project enabled enforcement of road rules by automatic capture of traffic offences on surveillance cameras using a virtual loop, a video analytics solution with an automatic number plate recognition and utilising mobile wireless technology, GIS and GPS technologies.

The government would encourage continued use of e-governance for enhancing the efficiency of administration and also providing better service to the public.

The services being provided through Friends Centres would be replicated Akshaya Centres in the rural areas.
