CPI(M) plans stir against price rise

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] on Sunday said that 5 lakh workers will participate in its 1,000-km-long demonstration to be held on August 11 in protest against price rise, the crash in prices of agricultural commodities, the corporatisation of the marine fisheries sector and corruption.

Marine sector

In a statement here, the party State committee said that the marine sector was under serious threat of corporatisation with the Centre government amending various legislations relating to the sector in favour of corporate entities.

Traditional industrial sectors such as coir, cashew, handloom were facing serious crisis. In the coir sector, the workers were finding it difficult to eke out a living.

Cashew factories were closing down, further posing a threat to the factory workers.

Welfare pensions

The State Government had failed to distribute welfare pensions to various categories belonging to traditional industrial sector, it said justifying its decision to launch an agitation.
