The Congress political affairs committee (PAC) on Wednesday expressed full confidence in the leadership of Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala and extended the party’s full support to him, thereby bringing down the curtains on the media debate on a leadership change.

The PAC went to the extent of passing a resolution at its meeting here to put to rest the media debate triggered by A.A. Azeez, State secretary of the Revolutionary Socialist Party, comparing former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Mr. Chennithala as Opposition leaders.

“The debate was a media creation. Mr. Chennithala is efficient as Opposition leader in all sense of the term. There is no reason for a bringing in a change,” the resolution said expressing satisfaction at his performance.

Addressing a press conference soon after the meeting, KPCC president M.M. Hassan said the PAC discussed Mr. Azeez and Mr. K Muraleedharan’s observations on the issue. Mr. Muraleedharan explained that he was quoted out of context and the media reports did not carry the entire brunt of his observations.

As for Mr. Azeez, Mr. Hassan said the RSP leader had since corrected himself and Mr. Chandy himself had given his views on the topic.

'Chandy better than him'

Mr. Azeez had stated at a press conference the other day that Mr. Chandy was a better Leader of the Opposition than Mr. Chennithala. Some of the Congress leaders added grist to the mill by joining the debate, giving a twist.

In reply to a question, Mr. Hassan said the question whether the Opposition leader was efficient in his performance or not did not figure at all within the party and the situation also did not warrant such a change.
