The Thiruvananthapuram City police on Friday joined a modest group of police forces in the country to come out with a mobile application for women’s safety, when it updated its existing app, TCP, into one with special features for women.
The iSafe panic button, announced to coincide with International Women’s Day, has put the Thiruvananthapuram City police in a group that includes the police forces of Delhi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Odisha, Uttarakhand, Chandigarh and Kanpur, who have either launched or announced similar apps.
S. Ajeetha Begum, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), said the success of the app would depend on the response time of the police, for which arrangements had been made and instructions issued to the police control room.
Sense of security
The app, she said, would be particularly useful for women working late in the night and would also instil a sense of security in them.
“We hope the fact that such an app exists will also deter criminals.”
For Android users
The app has its limitations though, with only Android users having access now.
Efforts were on to make the app available on other mobile platforms, including iPhones, Ms. Begum said.
The true impact of the app would be felt when more women became aware of it and began using it.
