Minister for Health K.K. Shylaja has called for concerted efforts to raise the Neurosurgery Department at Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) here to international standards.

She was speaking at the inauguration of the golden jubilee celebrations of the Neurosurgery wing here on Wednesday.

The Minister urged doctors to ascertain the latest technology available in the sector. Doctors in the Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, and Kottayam medical colleges were counted among the best, owing to their hard work. They should now try to earn a name at the global level, Ms. Shylaja said.

Any problem with the brain had the ability to upset the entire life. Modern treatment made it possible to detect in which part of the brain the problem lay.

However, doctors at medical colleges had made great strides even when such technology was not at their disposal, she said.

Minister for Devaswoms Kadakampally Surendran, who presided over the function, said neurosurgeons had tasted success even when they had to perform complicated procedures with limited resources.

Medical Education Joint Director K. Sreekumari, Government Medical College Principal Thomas Mathew, hospital superintendent M.S. Sharmad, and Neurosurgery Department head Anilkumar P. were present.
