Kerala Tourism has stepped in to create basic facilities and beautify the bund road that links the two sides of the picturesque Vellayani Lake, one of the three rain-fed freshwater lakes.
The initiative comes in the wake of tourists arriving in large numbers to enjoy the lush greenery of the lake, rich repository of flora and fauna and over 100 species of wet land birds, including migratory birds. A 300-metre-stretch of the bund road at Kakkamoola had been spruced up to enable the visitors relax and enjoy the beauty of the largest freshwater lake of the capital district.
Paved walkway, hand rails, street furniture, and solar-powered electric works had been provided at a cost of Rs.20 lakh.
The proposal was to create the facilities at a cost of Rs.51.35 lakh. But, the working group on Tourism had reduced the project and allocation to Rs.20 lakh. The work was executed through the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) and had been completed, a tourism official said.
