A spirited athlete, breaking the chains that are keeping him or her confined: the official logo of the first-ever State Transgenders Athletics Meet speaks volumes of its significance for the transgender community.

The meet, to be held on April 28 at the Central Stadium here, is part of the State government’s efforts towards bringing the transgender community out of the fringes of society.

To be organised by the Kerala State Sports Council, the event is touted to be the first of its kind in the nation, and perhaps even in the world.

Logo released

The official logo of the event was released on Wednesday by Sports Council vice president Mercy Kuttan.

Sports Council president T.P. Dasan was present.

Speaking on the occasion, Sreekutti, president, Sexual and Gender Minority Federation of Kerala, said that the initiative presented an opportunity for bringing about gender equality in the sports field as well.

An inclusive platform

“While many among us are active in the arts, whether it is dance or acting, sports is an area where an inclusive platform has not been provided. This opportunity to showcase our athletic skills without facing discrimination is hence a much-needed step,” she said.

Around 20 transgenders from each district will participate in six athletic events, including 100 m, 200 m and 400 m races, 4x100 m relay, shot put and long jump.
