The Thampanoor police on Thursday night arrested a 23-year-old native of Kathmandu in Nepal who was attempting to break into a scanning centre and computer lab near the Thycaud Government Hospital. His two accomplices managed to give the police the slip.
The police identified the accused as Mahesh Kumar.
Suresh V. Nair, Circle Inspector, Thampanoor, said Mahesh Kumar doubled up as a hotel waiter during the day and had carried out thefts in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi at night. He said the police reached the scene of crime following a tip-off.
Mr. Suresh Nair said the accused who had reached the country as a teenager and his accomplices used to work at hotels as waiters in different States and had reached Kochi last year. The gang allegedly carried out several motorbike thefts apart from breaking into computer institutions and even Beverages Corporation outlets in Kochi. Mahesh Kumar was nabbed during one of these burglaries and was released from the Viyyur Central Prison only last month, after which he reached the capital, where he is said to have carried out a theft in a finance institution under the Museum police station limits before attempting the burglary at Thycaud.
Raids and verifications are on in migrant labour camps in the capital city to trace the two absconders.
