A three-and-a-half-year-old boy drowned in the sea at Shanghumughom on Sunday night after he was swept away by the waves when he entered the water along with his grandfather.

The Valiathura police said the incident occurred around 8.15 p.m. Hrishikesh, son of Anil Kumar and Sreelakshmi of Kuravankonam, had gone to the beach along with his parents and grandfather. Hrishikesh and his grandfather had entered the water when the boy fell down and was swept away by the waves. Though he was taken out of the water by lifeguards on the beach, his life could not be saved. The body has been shifted to the morgue of Government Medical College Hospital.

The Valiathura police have registered a case in connection with the incident.
