The pastoral council of the Latin Archdiocese of Thiruvananthapuram has demanded that the government stop moves to open new liquor shops in the district, particularly in the coastal belt.
A meeting of the council here on Saturday said it would resort to mass agitations if the government went ahead with moves to open new liquor shops or bars or hotels that had permission to serve liquor.
Accusing both the government and the Opposition of ‘cheating’ the public in the name of liquor, the council demanded that both fronts change their liquor policies, amend the Abkari Act, and stop all attempts to open new liquor shops.
The council stated that protests would be launched against the proposed liquor shops at Kadinamkulam and Poovar.
The meeting elected Joy John as the new council secretary and G.M. Joseph as the vice-president. Archdiocese Vicar-General Mon. Eugene H. Pereira and others were present, according to a press release.
