Aerobic bins find few takers

Corporation’s waste management programme floundering

: The ‘My City, Beautiful City’ waste management programme is said to be one of the key initiatives of the city Corporation. But, over the past one year, there has been much talk of the programme floundering with waste mounting at several areas. The state of a batch of aerobic bins, a key component of the decentralised waste management plan at Kunjalumoodu throws some light on the current status of the programme.

The aerobic bins and the shed housing them, located near the Kunjalumoodu junction, were completely destroyed several months back when the mud wall behind it caved in. Though this happened even before the Assembly elections, there has been no attempt till date to repair or replace these damaged aerobic bins. Even the debris from the caving in was cleared only a few weeks back.

Aerobic bins are currently being used efficiently only in a few places where they were originally set up. The ones in Erumakkuzhi and Palayam market are still running to capacity, although there are no takers for the compost produced from processing waste in these bins. But at other places, only a handful of the bins set up are being put to any use. At Jagathy, where the waste dump was sealed and 25 aerobic bins installed, only three or four bins are being used now.

The declaration of ‘clean wards’, which used to happen every month during the last few months of the previous Corporation council, has almost ceased now.
