The J.M. James Admission Supervisory Committee (ASC) will, on September 20, hold a hearing for students who have submitted complaints against the manner in which some self-financing medical colleges are carrying out admissions to the MBBS programme.
So far, the committee has received 521 complaints regarding the manner in which such colleges are carrying out admissions to the course. While the committee, on Saturday, issued a set of guidelines to medical colleges based on some common complaints raised by students, individual complaints against colleges would be heard on September 20.
The committee has directed such colleges to make available either the Principal or an authorised representative for the hearing. A final decision on the complaints would be taken by the ASC on September 20 itself.
Online applications
A common complaint raised by students against some colleges was that they were rejecting the online applications submitted by them on flimsy grounds. The ASC on Saturday directed all private self-financing medical colleges not to reject online applications without giving candidates an opportunity to rectify any mistakes in them.
“A lot of complaints have been filed by the applicants/parents and others alleging that the medical colleges are deliberately rejecting online application forms on flimsy reasons such as the undertakings to produce bank guarantees are not proper or certain documents are not legible or missing. Thereafter, the medical colleges are granting seats to other applicants whose entrance ranks are far below that of the rejected applicants,” the committee’s directive to colleges notes.
If medical colleges admit other students after rejecting online applications on flimsy reasons, admission of such candidates would not be approved and the same would be cancelled after scrutiny of the records, the committee’s directive warns.
‘Publish details’
The ASC has further directed that all medical colleges publish on their websites the details of total individual online applications received for admissions to the MBBS course for 2016-17, the details of defects noted by the medical college in respect of the applications, and the method through which such defects were “cured/corrected/rectified,” the total list of eligible applicants for MBBS admissions 2016-17 in the medical colleges, the total list of rejected candidates from among the online applications, and the total list of eligible candidates for admission to the MBBS course under management and NRI quotas “prepared strictly on inter-se merit basing on the NEET rank list.”
In addition to publishing these details on the websites, the colleges are also asked to make known such details to all applicants, candidates, parents and to the public.
