Councillors of the ruling and Opposition fronts on Tuesday demanded action against unauthorised bunks in the city.
The issue came up during the presentation of a resolution at the council about a High Court verdict directing the Corporation to grant licence to a bunk shop on Nandavam Road. UDF councillors pointed out that many bunk owners were relying on such court orders to run unauthorised establishments and that the Corporation was losing these cases in the court due to inadequate representation.

Leader of the Opposition Johnson Joseph said the Corporation should constitute a committee to identify and take action against such unauthorised establishments.
Deputy Mayor V. Jayaprakash informed the council that a team comprising the corporation health officer, revenue officer and the town planning officer had been entrusted with the task of identifying such shops.
“The finance standing committee has received applications from such shop owners seeking commercial licence for their establishments. But if we grant them licence and levy tax, we will be legalising them. So the finance standing committee will look into the matter and present its report at the next council,” he said.
Sanitation complex
The council approved a resolution identifying the premises of Attakulangara Government Central School, Thycaud Women and Children Hospital and the Peroorkada Government Hospital for constructing sanitation complex for women that will be taken up under a project to be jointly implemented by the Suchitwa Mission and the Corporation.
Poundukadavu ward councillor Veli Varghese raised the delay in releasing subsidy amounts to the beneficiaries of the Basic Services to Urban Poor (BSUP) housing scheme.
