Absconders held during combing drive

A pre-Onam combing operation carried out by the Thiruvananthapuram Rural police during the weekend saw 21 offenders, declared by various courts as absconders, being nabbed, apart from several others being arrested and charged with various offences.

According to Rajpal Meena, Superintendent of Police (Thiruvananthapuram Rural), the combing was initiated to curb illicit sale of liquor, accidents and other crimes. Absconders, 21 of them, were held from various parts of the district during the operation while over 170 persons, against whom arrest warrants were pending, were also apprehended.

Apart from these, 147 persons were arrested for driving recklessly in an inebriated condition, while132 persons were held for various atrocities against women. The number of persons held for consumption of liquor in public places and thereafter creating nuisance for the public was 125.

More than 700 persons were fined for various violations of the Motor Vehicles Act, Mr. Meena said. Similar combing operations would continue, he added.
