A collaborative effort by the Kerala-based theatre group, Abhinaya, and an international band from Australia, Topology, is opening up endless possibilities of new forms in performing arts.
The Abhinaya Theatre group will perform its well-known play Sagarakanyaka with live background score by Topology, at the World Theater fest, organised by Brisbane Power House in Brisbane, Australia, from February 24 to 26, 2012.
Directed by Jyothish M.G., the play is based on Henrik Ibsen's The Lady from the Sea . Scripted in Malayalam, it was one of the plays staged at the Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2011, curated by the National School of Drama.
Andrew Ross, Artisitc Director of Brisbane Power House, said the idea of a collaborative venture was conceived after he watched the play at the Bharat Rang Mahotsav.
He added that the aim of the world theatre festival was to create an international gathering and interest for contemporary works.
The music score for the play is by Topology, a band of five members who play saxophone, strings and piano, known for creating original works across many genres. The group has to its credit several award winning concert series and has completed four international tours.
“I was inspired by the sincere and heartfelt performance and production by the artists of Abhinaya. The music will be a representation of the sea and will be a work concentrated on sound rather than melody,” said Robert Davidson, band member.
Director of the play Jyothish M.G. said that through this effort, the works of Indian theatre could reach an international audience.
