Since March, S. Divya, 9, and her mother has been spending most of their time at the Medical College Hospital — caught up in lab tests, scans, and surgeries for Divya.
Divya, a class V student of Holy Angels School in the city, has not been to school or met her friends because she is unable to walk anymore. However, the giant-cell tumour, a rare type of bone tumour, has not weakened Divay’s hope of going back to school again and her mother knows her prayers were answered when Minister for Health V.S. Sivakumar called on them at their residence on Tuesday.
The Minister offered financial assistance to the family and promised treatment facilities.
“When I came to know that Divya had this rare tumour, I did not know where I should seek help because my husband left us when she was nine months old. Luckily, the school authorities came to my help. Through them, I received the help from the Minister and I am grateful for their support,” said A. Sreekumari, who lives with her daughter in a rented house at Pettah. Divya, who had already undergone two operations will be admitted for a third one after the results of some lab tests arrived.
The surgeries will be performed in two months, on the basis of the results, said Subin Sugath, the doctor in charge of the treatment.
