Five decades dissolved into one moment at the first major alumni meet held at the Institute of English of the University of Kerala here on Sunday.

Nearly 150 present and former students of the institute, the English teaching department of the university, spent an entire day together, recalling the days they were at the premier teaching and learning centre and paying tributes to their illustrious teachers, including the intellectual powerhouse Dr K. Ayyappa Paniker.

Dr. Paniker’s satirical poem ‘The last moments of an Indian mother’ found a stage adaptation at the event, which also featured fiction and non-fiction short films done at different times by students of the institute. The Dr C.P.K. Tharakan and Dr K.P.K. Menon endowment awards were presented to the department toppers and the best outgoing students at the function.

Present to greet the former and present students were former heads of the institution Dr K. Radha, Dr Jameela Beegum, Dr Jancy James, Dr Evangeline Shanti Roy and Dr Maya Dutt, besides former students who had excelled in diverse fields.
