Funds for IT-based patient care

January 07, 2017 12:33 am | Updated 12:33 am IST - Thiruvananthapuram:

The Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has approved a fund of Rs.8.95 crore to Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) for implementation of a project titled, e-Delivery System for Health Care Management and Research.

The project is aimed at creating specialised medical data repository, e-learning tools, implementation of big data analytics, introduction of VC (video consultation)-based patient management, implementation of mobile patient management systems, setting up a robust IT infrastructure and so on.

SCTIMST Director Asha Kishore said that the funding support from the Centre was for setting up the physical infrastructure and for purchasing the hardware required for setting up the data centre.

“We have a huge volume of data to be stored as case records, MRI images, teaching and research materials, all of which have to be preserved for a long time. This kind of data storage required the setting up of our own data centre as all of the data cannot be stored in the cloud. We had thus submitted a proposal to the IT Ministry for funding. This support will help us upgrade our IT facilities and enable us to provide high quality IT-based services for clinical purposes, teaching, and public health initiatives,” Dr. Kishore said,

All out-patient (OP) services at SCTIMST are now fully digitised, with electronic medical records (EMR) generated for every patient.

The digitisation of in-patient (IP) services is being taken up.
