The City Corporation has imposed a fine of Rs.250 each on 39 persons for careless disposal of garbage in public places.

This is the first crackdown by the Corporation after the bylaws for the second phase of the Capital City Clean City programme were adopted by the council.

A pressnote quoting the Corporation Secretary said the offenders were identified and issued notice following an inspection by Health Inspectors and Junior Health Inspectors. It said the Corporation would resort to imposition of stiff penalties to deter litterbugs.

“The Corporation has a mechanism in place for scientific collection and processing of garbage. Stern action will be taken against anyone who refuses to utilise the mechanism. A special squad has been set up by the Health section to identify offenders,” the pressnote said, calling for public involvement to help streamline the solid waste management system.
