Three natives of Rajasthan were taken into custody by officials of the State GST Department on charges of carrying 14.5 kg of gold ornaments, valued at ₹4.80 crore.
Those apprehended have been identified as Mahendra Singh, Karsan Kumar Dewasi and Suraj Pansingh. They were nabbed during a vehicle inspection undertaken near the Amaravila check-post by three squads of the department led by State GST officers C.S. Anil, Gopakumar and Suresh Kumar.
Supply to jewelleries
According to Mr. Anil, the ornaments, which carried tags that stated their weight, were being brought for supply to jewellery outlets in the district.
Detailed inspection
It was during a detailed inspection of the car that the officials found the ornaments concealed within the arm rest on the back seat. The ornaments were being brought from a source in Tamil Nadu, it was claimed.
A few days ago, officials had confiscated around 1 kg of gold ornaments that were being brought from Thrissur to Neyyattinkara. Official sources said many cases of unaccounted gold being smuggled through the Amaravila check-post have been reported in recent times.
