Youth gets two years’ RI for possessing ganja

Principal District and Sessions Judge Uma M.G. on Wednesday sentenced Mohammed Shiraj (30) of Naringana to two years rigorous imprisonment for possessing 1.4 kg of ganja.The Coastal Security Police arrested Mohammed Shiraj and Sharif on the Ullal beach near Subhash Nagar on July 14, 2009. While Shiraj was found with a bag containing ganja, the police chased and arrested Sharif, who reportedly fled from the beach seeing them.

The judge convicted Shiraj under the Narcotic and Psychotropic Substances Act and he has also been asked to pay a fine of Rs. 10,000.

If he fails to pay the fine then Shiraj has to undergo a further six months of rigorous imprisonment.

Conviction

The judge acquitted Sharif for lack of evidence. Prosecutor Pushparaj Adhyantaya conducted the case.
