Turnout at workers’ conference disappointing

Shobha Karandlaje, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency, said on Friday that effective laws should be passed to solve the problems of unorganised workers.

She was speaking at the workers’ conference organised by the BJP Labour Cell here. The programme started an hour and a half late; despite the delay, the Sheshashayana hall was only half full.

Ms. Karandlaje said there was a shortage of staff in many government departments. But people were still being hired on contract basis. This had also led to middlemen taking advantage of the situation.

It was necessary to strictly enforce the labour laws and those violating it should be severely punished, Ms. Karandlaje said.

Low turnout

Earlier, Shailendra Shetty, leader of the BJP labour cell, said though he had informed all the workers, he could not understand why they had not turned up. The workers should realise that they had to be united not when they faced crises, but also on other occasions, he said.

MLC Kota Srinivas Poojary, former MLAs Raghupati Bhat and Lalaji Mendon, BJP district unit president T.V. Hegde, and other party leaders were present.
