A 23-year-old woman and her two-year-old daughter died of burns in their house at Sangabettu n the Bantwal Rural police station limits on Tuesday.
The police said Mamata (23) locked the door of her room soon after her mother-in-law Padmavathi left the house for shopping on Tuesday afternoon. Her father-in-law Nonayya Shettigar was working on the farm adjacent to the house.
The police said she poured kerosene upon herself and also on her daughter Kushi, before setting themselves ablaze.
Her father-in-law Nonayya rushed to the house hearing screams from the room.
When he opened the door Mamata was found dead. Kushi died while she was being taken to a nearby hospital.
The police said Mamata was married three years ago with Jayanth Shettigar, who has been working in a hotel in Bangalore for the last three months.
Mamatha's sister Vishalakshi has complained that her sister was being harassed by her mother-in-law.
The police said they had registered a case against Padmavathi of harassing Mamata.
The Bantwal rural police are waiting for the ante-mortem and post mortem reports in relation to the two deaths.
