Mangalore University is all set to launch wi-fi facility at its Mangalagangothri campus from Saturday.
Nalin Kumar Kateel, Dakshina Kannada MP, will inaugurate the facility on the campus at 10 a.m. on March 28. Vice-Chancellor K. Byrappa will preside over the launching programme, a release said.
This is part of the efforts to upgrade the university to global standards by providing students and teachers with modern communication facilities, the release said.
The service is provided through two independent internet service providers (ISPs). One is through NKN — high speed connection of up to 1 Gbps (Gigabit per second) — and the other through a 10 Mbps leased line from the BSNL. Entire campus is configured as a set of Virtual Local Area Networks (VLAN).
Security is a major concern in wi-fi usage. Adequate security – both for connectivity to wi-fi network and to the data transferred over the air — have been ensured.
The user is allowed to access only through a registered mobile device, where MAC id (media access control address) of the device shall be the identifying feature. Additionally, the user has to authenticate using a username and password assigned to them, it said.
Security measures such as mobile device registration and password-based authentication has been taken
