The Kesard Onji Dina (a day in slushy waters) showcased rural sports of the region in their glory and splendour at Nailapade at Alevoor village near Udupi on Sunday.

The annual event was organised by the Sarvajanika Ganeshotsava Samiti of Gudeangadi, Alevoor. Competitions such as running race, running backwards, tug-of-war, volleyball, and “tapangayi” were held in the slushy waters of the fields.

Member of the Organising Committee Rajesh said the committee wanted to promote rural sports, which were “vanishing in the present day computer age”.

After working hard for a year, this event came as a refreshing change. “We want to preserve rural sports and let the youngsters know the importance of these sports,” Mr. Rajesh said.

Purnima, who won two prizes in the sports event, said: “I am happy because women participated in great numbers. Winning is not important. It helps women come together at this event.”

People were treated to a rural meal of ganji, pickles, chutney, and huruli saaru. People enjoyed this simple but delicious meal, after having exhausted all their energy in the field. Alevoor Gram Panchayat president Harish Kini and samiti president Gopala B. were present.
