The Bantwal police on Friday arrested two people, including the admin of a WhatsApp group for allegedly attempting to promote enmity between groups and outraging the modesty of a woman.

In a communiqué here, Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police C.H. Sudheer Kumar Reddy said Balakrishna Pujari, 48, son of Annu Pujari, a KSRTC driver and resident of Uppinangady, had posted messages that could hurt religious sentiment. The accused had also posted messages that potentially demeaned the modesty of a woman. Satish, the son of Jagath Shetty, from Ira village, was the admin of the group in which Pujari had shared the messages. The messages were posted in groups named ‘Mauri’ and ‘Pannolibail’.

The police have booked cases under Sections 153(A) — promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language etc; 354 — outraging the modesty of a woman; and 504 — intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace; of the Indian Penal Code.
