Two die in collision

July 08, 2012 02:31 pm | Updated 02:31 pm IST - MANGALORE:

Two persons died and two others were injured in an accident involving a car and a private bus on the national highway at Jeppinamogaru on Saturday.

The police gave the names of the dead as Ashwit Alva (18) and his grandmother Suguna Alva (65). Ashwit’s mother Geeta Alva and 12-year-old Sharavu Alva were admitted to private hospitals, and their condition is said to be serious.

According to Mangalore Rural police, Ashwit Alva was driving the car towards the city. He overtook a vehicle and rammed the bus (route No.51). The police said the private bus was on the wrong side, leaving the car driver with little option to avert a collision. Ashwit and his grandmother died on the spot, the police said.

A private bus fell into a ditch, injuring 26 people on June 27. In both cases, the private buses were on the wrong side of the road. “We are finding this violation more during the non-peak hours when there is not much traffic on the road,” Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh told The Hindu .

Mr. Singh said that officials of the National Highways Authority of India would be made a party in Saturday’s accident for not taking measures to prevent movement of vehicles on the wrong side when roadwork was under way.
