A college student and a tile factory employee died of injuries when the bus they were travelling in overturned after being hit by a truck near Nanthoor junction here on Wednesday.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Uday Nayak said the bus was coming towards the junction from Moodbidri while the truck, carrying fish, was coming from the Udupi side. The two roads intersect at Nanthoor junction.

At the junction the truck hit the tail-end of the bus as it crossed at around 8 a.m. and both the vehicles overturned, Mr. Nayak said.

Umanath (20), a second year ITI student, and Ganesh (26), a tile factory employee, who were on the footboard of the bus, sustained injuries. They were taken to a private hospital where they died.

Seven other persons, including Naseruddin who was the truck driver, were seriously injured. They have been taken to three private hospitals and to the Government Wenlock Hospital.

A few sustained minor injuries and they were treated in nearby private hospitals.

The police said that Umanath, a resident of Moodbidri, was on his way to attend his college and that Ganesh was a resident of Gurupura. Traffic at the junction was affected for nearly four hours and cranes were used to move the vehicles off the road.

A case has been registered against the lorry driver Naseruddin, who hails from Kerala.
