Vehicle riders and drivers should carry valid “Pollution Under Control” (PUC) Certificate while going out as the Transport Department is seriously observing Air Pollution Control Month since the beginning of November.

With limited availability of personnel, it is first checking whether the vehicle has valid PUC certificate and later subject the vehicle for pollution check.

On Thursday, the department booked 43 cases against erring vehicles even as it seized another 16 vehicles.

Of the 43 cases against check lists were issued include eight motorcycles, five autorickshaws, six goods vehicles, one light motor vehicle, eight KSRTC buses and15 private buses.

Senior Regional Transport Officer G.S. Hegde told The Hindu that the department has written specifically to Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation to keep emission levels of its vehicles strictly under control.

There have been numerous complaints that many KSRTC buses were emitting thick black smoke thereby aggravating levels of air pollution, he said.

Mr. Hegde said the drive also helped the department to stumble upon other violations too with regard to documents of a particular vehicle.

For example, the school bus which was inspected did not have fitness certificate (FC) since 2013 but was plying on the road without any authorisation. Road tax for the bus too was not paid for equal number of years.

Consequently, the department has planned to undertake a special drive on school vehicles in the coming days to check whether everything is proper with those vehicles, Mr. Hegde added.
