Tension as two opposing groupsassemble in front of police station

Tension prevailed for a while at Puttur Rural Police Station on Monday evening as people from two communities gathered following an assault on a lorry driver for his alleged misbehaviour with a girl at Mairoli near Sampya.

According to the police, Yusuf (40), driver from Kedambady village, stopped his truck near Mairoli on Monday evening and reportedly behaved in an indecent way with a 16-year-old girl.

The girl confronted Yusuf, who the left the place in his truck. After he moved a few metres ahead, a group of people stopped the truck and assaulted Yusuf. The group then brought Yusuf to the police.

Complaint

On a complaint by the girl, the Puttur Rural Police arrested Yusuf for an offence under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

The police also registered a case against those who assaulted Yusuf and arrested two persons.

Lathi-charge

Meanwhile, supporters of Yusuf started gathering at the police station. Similarly, supporters of those accused of assaulting Yusuf too gathered at the place. When the two groups failed to disperse following requests, the police lathi-charged them to send them away. The police registered a case of unlawful assembly against those who had assembled at the police station.
