Maheshwari, Vice-president of the Akhila Bharat Mahila Congress, on Tuesday called upon women Congress activists to work towards bringing the party back to power in the State.
Inaugurating the District Mahila Congress Convention, Ms. Maheshwari said the Congress had been working for the welfare of women. It has brought in pieces of legislation to protect women and reserved 50 per cent seats in the urban local bodies for women. Ms. Maheswari said it was necessary for Mahila Congress activists to speak about the work done by the Congress and of the United Progressive Alliance government. “The only way to show gratitude to Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi was to bring Congress rule here,” she said and added: “Tell about our work and also about the damage caused during the BJP’s five-year rule here.”
The former Union Minister D.K. Taradevi Siddhartha said the Bharatiya Janata Party was politicising the July 28 home stay attack by supporting those who carried out the attack on young men and women. “They came to power with all sweet talks. It is bad to see them supporting such shocking acts of moral policing.” It was unfortunate that a party was politicising the issue rather than bringing attackers to justice.
Senior Congress leader B. Janardhan Poojary said there was a need for Congress activists to imbibe the spirit of sacrifice practised by leaders such as Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and Sonia Gandhi. “You should sacrifice and give chance for youngsters,” he said and it was this sense of sacrifice that led to development of the nation. He asked Mahila Congress activists to raise their voice against any actions within the party that were against the ideology of the party. “Learn this from (former MP) Tejaswini Gowda,” he said.
A few of Mahila Congress activists were felicitated.
