Areas in and around Attavara in the city got a fresh look with clean roads, drains and other public utilities after volunteers undertook a cleanliness drive in the 16th week of Swachhata Abhiyan of Ramakrishna Mission, Mangaluru.
Volunteers cleaned in the surroundings of Attavara Katte by sweeping the area and the roads, while KMC Hospital staff cleaned the road leading to the hospital. Students of Sarojini Madhusudan Kushe School cleaned the road leading to the school and the bus shelter, while locals cleaned the road leading to Mangaluru Central Railway Station.
Another group of volunteers removed illegal hoardings and banners, while a group of students went door to door with the ‘Swachh Mangaluru’ message.
People continue to litter the roadsides at many places. Volunteers are taking various measures to curb this menace. People hesitated to use the footpath in front of Attavara Centre as garbage used to be dumped on it. Volunteers removed the garbage and mud on the footpath, leaving it clean and hygienic. Erecting a stone wall to prevent mud slide, they placed some flower pots in the location.
Swachhata Abhiyan is being carried out in around 100 villages with the support of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat. Cleanliness drives have been conducted in Puttur, Manjanadi, Kayarthdaka, Atikaribettu, Someshwara, Merlapadavu, Kinya, Ullala, Mallur, Ulaibettu, Bajpe, Mennabettu, Valvadi and many other villages.
