The case of noted surgeon Babu Hundekar has turned out to be a case of ‘supari’ killing, and it has now emerged that his wife too was involved in the conspiracy.

Addressing presspersons here on Friday, Police Commissioner M.N. Nagaraj said Dr. Babu Hundekar’s wife, Shashikala, and Ismail Khanapur, who was among the ‘supari’ killers, have been arrested.

Shashikala’s younger brother Naveen Mulkigoudar, ‘supari’ killer Rakesh Yadav, and their accomplice Nandish have already been arrested.

Mr. Nagaraj said ‘supari’ worth ₹1 lakh was given to Rakesh Yadav and Ismail Khanapur, and a initial payment of ₹10,000 had been made.

The surgeon was killed in his house by the accused on March 12. The police said he was beaten with an iron rod and stabbed. The body was taken in a car and burnt on the outskirts of Hubballi, near Shiraguppi village.

Mr. Nagaraj said following a complaint by the surgeon’s father, Basappa Hundekar, that his son was missing, the police had taken up the investigation. The blood stains in the house of the surgeon gave room for suspicion, and during interrogation Naveen confessed to the crime, he said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Renuka Sukumar said Naveen had borrowed around ₹1 crore from Dr. Babu Hundekar and the surgeon had asked for it.

Investigation revealed that Shashikala was reportedly upset over the alleged extramarital affair of the surgeon; and she was particularly unhappy about the news that her husband wanted to give a huge sum to a woman.

The murder was reportedly planned 15 days in advance. The Vidyanagar police have registered a case.
