K. Raghupati Bhat, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former MLA, said on Wednesday that the party would oppose the government’s reported move of mortgaging of 25 acres of land of the Brahmavar Cooperative Sugar Factory to the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB).
Mr. Bhat said the government was planning to raise Rs. 10 crore by mortgaging the land. The BJP’s opposition lay in the mortgage to the KIADB, as it would likely establish an industrial area and render it irreclaimable.
The BJP was also opposed to giving 98 cents out of the six acres of land in Beedinagudde in Udupi for the Officers’ Club. The land was reserved to build a 60-yard cricket stadium.
There was no big public ground in Udupi to hold rallies or events such as Udupi Utsava (currently held in private land). Hence, the six acres were essential both for cricket and public rallies.
