Four houses and an anganawadi were damaged in storm in Udupi district on Thursday. Sea erosion was also reported from various places in the district.
According to the Udupi Taluk Office, the cement roof sheets of an anganwadi centre were blown away by strong winds at Kuthpady village and the loss was estimated at Rs. 15,800. Nearly 100 coconut trees had been washed away by the sea at Tenka Yermal village.
According to the Kundapur Taluk Office, damage due to strong winds in a house in Kasaba village was estimated at Rs. 15,000. The roof of a house was damaged when a tree fell on it, causing loss of Rs. 10,000.
Gayatri Naik, Kundapur Tahsildar, said that sea erosion was intense at Gujjady village in the taluk. If the same intensity continued for some more days, two houses might be damaged, she said.
Executive Engineer in the Department of Ports and Fisheries T.S. Rathod, said that sea erosion continued in 13 places in the district including Tenka Yermal, Padukere-Kuthpady, Trasi, Marvanthe and Kalihithlu.
Boulders to reduce the intensity of the waves would be put in the interior areas in the next two days, he said.
Rainfall
The Deputy Commissioner’s Office said Udupi received 30 mm of rain in the last 24 hours ended 8.30 a.m. on Thursday. Kundapur and Karkala towns received 74.1 mm and 59.2 mm of rain, respectively. The Meteorological Department had forecast a rainfall of about 125 mm in the district in the next 48 hours and fishermen had been advised not to venture into the sea.
