Steps being taken to check accidents on NH66: DC

Deputy Commissioner R. Vishal said on Wednesday that various steps were being taken to reduce the number of accidents on National Highway 66 in Udupi district while chairing the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) meeting here last week.

Dr. Vishal said there were several requests from people to construct humps near schools on NH 66. He directed the National Highways Department to install rumble strips near schools as humps cannot be constructed on highways. “Many accidents take place where the feeder roads join NH 66. Hence, there should be road humps on the feeder roads before they joined NH 66,” he said.

Convex mirrors will be installed at junctions where the feeder roads meet NH 66, so that the drivers had a clear idea of the movement of vehicles. Proper sign boards would also be installed at all places to provide directions to the vehicle drivers, he said.

Directions had been issued to the departments concerned to fill potholes on all roads including major district roads and those belonging to the Public Works Department. There were complaints of too many autorickshaw stands in Udupi city and more autorickshaws than required being parked in these stands.

The RTA will take feedback from the Udupi City Municipal Council before deciding on the issue.
