Minister of State for Fisheries, Youth Services and Sports Pramod Madhwaraj has said that skill-based training would improve the job prospects of the youth.
He was speaking after inaugurating the enrolment drive camp for unemployed youth organised under the Kaushalya Karnataka scheme, here.
Mr. Madhawraj said that the State government had set a target to provide skill-based training to 9,100 youth in Udupi district. The district had topped the State in the pass percentage in SSLC and PU II examination this year. This showed that the standard of education, the quality of teachers, students, and educational institutions in the district, were high. He would urge Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to increase the target for giving skill-based training for the youth of Udupi district, he said.
Mr. Madhwaraj said that he had observed that of the 6,000 youth applying for jobs during udyog (employment) melas, only 10% got it. This was not because the candidates lacked marks, but they lacked job oriented skills. The Kaushalya Karnataka scheme was formed to address this problem. Nearly 27,300 youth were expected to be enrolled for the skill training in the district, he said.
District in-charge secretary M. Maheshwar Rao said that there was scope for those who got skill-based training to work on the shop floors of big factories. Big factories and industries expected youth not just to have theoretical knowledge but also practical hands on knowledge. Skill-based training would also help the youth to get self employed, he said.
Presiding over the function, Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis said that the youth between the age of 18 and 35 can register their names in the portal kaushalkar.com if they could not do so in the enrolment camp. If they did not have Aadhaar cards, which was a prerequisite for the enrolment, they could attend the camp and their Aadhaar enrolment too will be done, she said. President of Udupi City Municipal Council Meenakshi Bannanje, president of Udupi Taluk Panchayat Nalini P. Rao, were among those present.
