Residents had a harrowing time after sewage entered their apartment complex in Mangaluru on Friday.

Residents of more than 20 flats in Vista Apartment in Kadri-Mallikatta here had a harrowing experience on Friday as sewage from the Mangaluru City Corporation’s sewage network entered the parking area.

According to activist Gerald Towers, sewage also entered the underground drinking water sump of the apartment polluting it.

As water stood to two ft. to three ft. level in the parking area many patients in the apartment could not come out. Power supply to the apartment had to be disconnected as a precautionary measure. Mr. Towers said that sewage also entered the premises of the nearby buildings.

He blamed the corporation officials carrying out underground drainage work on the main Nanthoor Junction-Mallikatta Road near in front of a chain food outlet by blocking the drainage line.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Nazir, commissioner of the corporation, said in a release on Friday that the corporation has taken up repair of the network laid during 1970s in some parts of the city.

It was repairing manholes and underground pipelines damaged. It was causing inconvenience to people. Hence people would have to cooperate with the corporation.

Due to damage to the network sewage was flowing on the roads. The ongoing works have also affected traffic in some parts of the city.

The corporation was completing the works on priority, he said.
